Our big day is finally here! Alley Cat and Squealer (aka Alana and Kyra) start their first day of first grade today.
First grade is a whole new playground for us all, but we’re still excited.
This year is going to be different for us, though (as I’m sure every year will be), as we are not in our own home right now. We are currently staying with my mother-in-love as we transition from military life to civilian life. My husband is still looking for a job, and we can’t start looking for a house until he does. We could be here for a couple of months, we could be here for 6 months. We’re just not sure. So, needless to say, we don’t have a lot of space, or even a lot of our own stuff.
I’ll try to get pictures later, but this is pretty much it. I bought a large bookshelf to put in one of the bedrooms. All the curriculum and books that I brought with us are on the top 3 shelves, while all of our supplies is in the cabinet at the bottom. The only other thing is a corkboard, which my MIL is letting us hang in the dining room for our calendar time. In the coming weeks, we’ll probably be adding a map to that.
Since we have a serious lack of books due to the move, our library card will be our best friend! I think I’ll need a shopping cart for all our books.
To help keep the wall clutter down, and avoid workboxes (which I had planned on using), the girls each have a weekly notebook. In it, there are six tabs–daily work and then one for each day of the week. The daily tab has our calendar time stuff, and the weekly has any assignment pages for each subject. They are only in first grade, so there’s not a whole lot that they will have in their weekly binders, but it is nice to have it all together.
We are starting out slow, only a couple of subjects this week, and gradually building over the next three weeks. By September, we will have all of our subjects up and going.
It’s all new. It’s all exciting. And we are taking homeschool life by storm!
